Kas yra perteklinė hidratacija ir kaip jos išvengti?

What is overhydration and how to avoid it?

Raves are all about music, dancing and unforgettable experiences, but it's important to remember to put your health and safety first. This time we'll talk about over-hydration, a common but under-reported problem at raves. Here's what you should know:

  • The myth of "plenty of fluids at all costs":
It's easy to be tempted to drink a lot of water, especially if you're dancing for hours or taking psychoactive substances. However, too much water in a short period of time can lead to a health-threatening condition called hyponatraemia, where the sodium level in your blood drops to life-threatening levels.

  • Signs of over-hydration:
Look out for symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, headache, confusion and swelling. This could mean that your body's electrolyte balance has been disturbed by too much water.

  • Keep the balance:
Instead of sipping water continuously, practise conscious fluid intake. Sip water slowly throughout the event (no more than 3 cups per hour) and consider sports drinks or electrolyte supplements to help maintain the body's electrolyte balance.

  • Know your limits:
Understanding your body and the substances you take is very important. Some psychoactive substances can affect your body's ability to regulate water intake, making you more likely to become over-hydrated. Always check out the substances you are taking and be aware of their possible effects.
